This is why those of us who learned in under funded, segregated, so-called colored schools, who had teachers educated at places like Howard, Spelman, Fisk, Florida A&M, etc.; teachers who lived in our neighborhoods, now, realize what we had that our children and grandchildren dont have in post racial Amerikkka: Teachers, who believed in discipline, like our lives depended upon it; Teachers who werent afraid to tell our Mamas, Daddys or Grandmas, in church, if thats what it took to get our attention; Teachers who expected us to learn about ourselves, our history and our music, even though it was not in the texts; Teachers who saved our minds, because they had higher standards. Teachers who nurtured our imaginations because they believed we were their future. Why did the promise of integration cause us to lose faith in each other and join The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America? Why did we give up on teaching and the value of teachers of color, who know the whole history of humans, math and science, the whole literature, the whole music, dance and art? Now, they say learning depends of funding. But those of us who learned in under funded, segregated schools, who were told, taught and knew we had to be better to survive in Amerikkka, we know what it takes. We must take back the classrooms and the schools, but, more importantly, take back the responsibility for nurturing and protecting our childrens minds and spirits, for the sake of us all.
