This is why we do what we do, and to get this type of an update it reminds us of the wonderful people who love these animals despite what they have experienced. Rusty is beloved and that is our reward. ADOPTER UPDATE: We adopted a rescue from you guys and love him dearly. Here is a story about our rescue, Rusty and some photos. As some of you are aware, we adopted a rescues dog, Rusty, last summer. He was a stray, picked up in North Carolina and saved by Last Chance Animal Rescue of Southampton. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him. He was abused as evidenced by the scratches on his face, scar tissue on one ear and a split on the other ear as well as a bad leg. The leg problem causes him to limp but his legs are very strong as he drags me all over. He loves the outdoors, other dogs and people. But, is very afraid of sharp, loud noises. A few weeks ago he stopped eating, got very lethargic and even more afraid of noises. We went to our vet who took blood and we had the results within minutes due to new technology. Rusty had a case of Ehrlichia Canus, a tick borne disease. He is being treated by antibiotics for three weeks and that should solve the tick disease. Our vet wanted to check further to see if there were any internal problems, so he took xrays. He looked good except for small round, unknown objects all over the xrays. It turns out that the foreign objects on the xrays are bird shot….my poor dog had been shot as well as being abused. The bird shot is all subcutaneous and cannot be felt from the outside, doesn’t seem to cause him any pain and hopefully it will cause no future harm. No wonder this poor animal is so afraid of loud noises. Bob Hamilton
