This is worse than the Ebola epidemic, and the reason why I dont like to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics. An estimated 58,000 babies died in India last year due to superbugs -- bacteria that are resistant to almost every antibiotic on the market. Why? Because in India, antibiotics are available OTC so people can use them for infections that may not require antibiotics, breeding resistant bugs. There is also poor sanitation control in India, with some sewage water not getting treated. Most often in my practice what patients come in with when they are sick is a virus, which does not require antibiotics. Unfortunately, patients think that antibiotics are a cure-all for their colds, which is not the case. They merely need to support their immune system with rest and the right supplements to get through the infection. When I dont prescribe an antibiotic its because Im using my best judgment to avoid creating superbugs in the interest of public health. People need to understand this is a very serious growing problem.
