This is written by Prof Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom on the demise of the late Karpal Singh Prof Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom is the Dep Pres of Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia. This morning, the demise Mr Karpal Singh, veteran opposition member of the Malaysian Parliament, is a lost to Malaysia. Some may say that this statement is arguable or debatable. Like all veteran politicians, he has had his fair share of political enemies and friends, those who hated him and others who loved him. His untiring efforts to be a true parliamentarian and uphold the ideals of our constitution have earned him respect from both sides of the political divide. None can deny that he voiced out his opinion without fear or favour. He has succeeded in making democracy alive in Malaysia. Even if I disagree with him on a few socio-political issues, I will not hesitate to say that this lost is felt by many Malaysian citizens. And if his funeral passes in front of me, I would stand up in respect, just as Muhammad (peace be upon him) the Prophet of Mercy advises us to do stand up when we see a funeral (Hadith no 398, narrated by Jabir bin ‘Abdullah, in “Al-Janaaiz” of al-Bukhari). My condolences to the family of the late Mr Karpal Singh.
