In 1955, MGM commissioned the artist Robert Andrew Parker to copy numerous famous Van Gogh paintings for the film Lust for Life, starring Kirk Douglas as the tormented artist (1956). The Van Gogh estate refused to permit use of the originals. In 1969, just before MGMs infamous prop and costume auction, the studio gave this painting to my dad (Artists Corner) to thank him for keeping the studio well stocked with art supplies.
