This isnt racist. It is Southern history. In the 50s prim and proper Vidalia area ladies met often at rotating homes for cake. It was not unusual for the dress of the day to be gloves and hats. I was a boy and shouldnt have listened in, but I was fascinated by the colorful conversations and the Tara like drama. When those ladies spoke of black people, they were somehow uncomfortable with the word Negro, and the word nigger was too harsh and ugly for polite society. So they invented a benign word...Nigra. They were comfortable with the word, their consciences accepted the word. I suppose necessity is the mother of invention. Im not saying it was okay, Im saying it was right for those women at that different time and that different place.
