This isnt the news we wanted. After being told that as much as $30M may have been available for 2014-2015, to have only $10M allocated represents a huge loss for an industry with a 30-plus-year footprint in North Carolina. With only $10M available to the grant program, we can expect less than $55M in economic impact for 2015. We havent seen all the details, but already know that the formula from the Senate a couple months ago will not effectively keep shows like Under The Dome On CBS or Sleepy Hollow working in North Carolina. Indeed, with a budget of between $2M - $3M per episode, such series would leave between $4M and $10M on the table each season by continuing to work in NC. In contrast, they could recoup fully 25 - 30% of their budget by working in Louisiana or Georgia. The most unfortunate byproduct of artificially capping the amount of business our State can do in a given year is the massive impact the $10M limit will have on overall job opportunities. The proposed plan will drop the number of overall unique job opportunities from nearly 15,000 per year (2012-2013) to a number in the hundreds or perhaps 1,200 range. Assuming that some productions actually forfeit the extra incentive money available from neighboring states (they wont), only a handful of positions will be available to our current talent base that numbers in the thousands. Perhaps 4 - 5 moderately-budgeted features or as many scripted TV series may lose money to come work here. This will not be tentpole work, unless our leaders panic and strike secretive back-door deals similar to the ones being forged in Michigan to lure more desirable visitors like Michael Bays Transformers franchise. North Carolina continues down the fiscally-conservative, pick-no-winners path our voters chose for the rest of us. Perhaps someday, the State will realize the huge mistake they made when our leaders showed a clean, well-paying industry out the door in 2014. Georgia could not be more delighted at their folly. portcitydaily/2014/07/29/budget-includes-10m-film-grant-program/
