This issue impacts everyone — particularly those areas least considered. Hospitals for example are open 24/7, utilize large amounts of electricity and are occupied with patients, employees and visitors all the time. In fact, a 2003 survey showed that hospitals account for 1 percent of the commercial buildings (2 percent of commercial floor space) and 4.3 percent of delivered energy use in the commercial sector. These costs are borne by the patient and hospitals in their operating costs. Increased costs means less that a provider can innovate.
