This last day in NY was great. In the morning I walked the Highline, the parkified elevated rails, through a mile and a half of the city. The abandoned railway has been planted with flowers and trees, and paved over in the middle with a pedestrian walkway. Walkers get to stroll through the air about two stories from the ground. Utterly changes the experience of being there. Sometimes you pass within a few yards of someone’s apartment window, sometimes you get a vista of the multilayered rising buildings. It would be worth it to build an el just to abandon it and make a park. Then on into Central Park again, which was full of life. The day was bright and sunny, and the crowds were a parade of humanity. Bubble guys, musicians, hot dog stands, lovers, children, families, wedding photographers, couples posing, acrobats, sailboats on the pond, a big gray heron standing on the edge apparently just posing for photos, nuns awalking, still a lot of color in the trees, fantastic stuff. Then on to the Frick, which is wall to wall creme de la creme masterpieces of European art. Vermeer, Rembrandt, Titian, Turner, Constable, Corot, Breughel, Houdon, Bellini, Monet, and more. It’s just a tad humbling. Then after dinner a quick trip to Union Square and a visit to the Strand bookstore. I wanted every book in the place. Returning home tomorrow, just in time before all my cultural circuits overload.
