This letter is in response to the customer overheard remarking that they thought we must be embarrassed to carry Christian books because of the size of that section in the store. This couldn’t be further from the truth! In order for our business to be successful, each section of the store must be carefully calibrated according to demand for books in that genre. Our children’s section, for instance, is quite large because families come in shopping for books every day. Parents bring their kids in after school, older kids walk to the bookstore after class, grandparents shop for gifts, and people are almost always browsing in that section. Similarly, Saturn carries a lot of fiction titles. We have customers who buy several books every single week from that side of the store. In the time that we’ve been here, Gaylord has had two dedicated Christian bookstores which, sadly, are no longer in business, and our section with Christian and Inspirational books has also diminished over time, as, for whatever reason, fewer titles have been purchased or special-ordered. We try to keep several different types of Bibles in stock – ones that our local clergy have told us they use, and big new books in that genre as they are published. I would love for that section to grow! All it would take would be for you and a dozen or so of your friends to visit us each week and buy or order just one book, or for, say, 50 or 60 folks to buy a book each month, for that section to begin to grow. (As there are millions of titles in print and we have room for only about 20,000 in the store, we special order dozens of books each week for customers, and most orders arrive within a few days to a week and those sales are, of course, taken into account when we look at demand for particular types of titles.) That isn’t the only section of the store to have changed in size over time. We are always tweaking in order to get the optimal mix for demand in our area. So… embarrassed to carry a certain type of book? Far from it – I am honored that the folks in Otsego County have let Saturn Booksellers be their bookstore for the past 22 years, and hope to continue to earn their patronage for many years to come. And the best way I know how to do that is to carry the types and quantities of books that people are coming in and purchasing. Sincerely, Jill Miner, owner Saturn Booksellers
