This little guy for those who have not had the pleasure of meeting - TopicsExpress

This little guy for those who have not had the pleasure of meeting him yet is Krumm, adored by all & sundry here at Storybook Farm. Krumms original owner was transferred to another state due to work commitments, his other family member was unable to assist Krumm with his urine expressing needs due to arthritis in her hands & rather than subject Krumm to being in a small apartment alone for hours each day they searched for a more suitable home for their special needs boy, which of course was us! Unlike many other sanctuaries we did not just take Krumm from his family and they never see their beloved friend again, we instead joined together with the family to become part of the village raising/loving Krumm. I have other special needs pets ( not just dogs but cats, horses, goats etc) here that we do the same with, most families are devastated when they are unable to care for these high needs pets and do not decide easily to give them up, I have sat with many a crying, sad person and the joy upon their face when we tell them we can not only take in their pet but they will still have full contact with them makes my day/job worthwhile. I regularly travel to the area Krumm was originally from so I take him with me on my rounds so his family still get to visit with him at least once a week which both Krumm & his family love, & I enjoy also, at no stage has Krumm been confused or even vaguely upset at seeing then leaving his family he happily gets out of the car when we arrive, then back in when it is time to go he has not fretted at all. I do not charge the family for this but they have helped us occasionally by giving us bags of kibble etc.I have families who visit their pet and the others who are further away we send photos & updates regularly.I firmly believe that pets are part of our family & this is my way of helping families stay together, the love that the pet receives during each family visit is as much if not more of the healing process than vet medicine. Krumm is an IVDD boy(,IVDD is a serious spinal disease that effects not only dachshunds but many different dog breeds) he had his surgery approx 18mths ago. Krumm is still in his wheels and may never walk again but he is leading the way as a noisy, naughty, bossy, happy, shining example to all owners of dogs that do not fully recover from IVDD that being in wheels certainly does not slow them down nor stop them from enjoying life to the fullest, you can tell by the expression on Krumms face in the photo my son took a few days ago whilst he was waiting for his turn on the therapy table just how happy he is!
