This looks like a worthy challenge for 2015. Kelli Byce, Joanne Jansen, Bonnie Omond. Just a few kilometres longer than the Raisin River Run :) Algonquin Outfitter MUSKOKA RIVER X race weekend starts this Friday with on-site registration starting at 9am. Over the September 12-14, 2014 weekend 126 paddlers from across Canada, the United States, and as far away as Hawaii will be converging on Muskoka to paddle 130km and complete 20 portages in under 24 hours. In the spirit of the early explorers of the 1800’s, teams will paddle fully-loaded with expedition gear, will not receive any assistance or support, and will not stop paddling until they reach the finish line. Regarded as the “toughest single day canoe race in the world” and one of the top ultra-distance paddling races in North America, teams will start their expedition in the town of Huntsville. Paddling across Fairy/Pen Lake and Lake of Bays, including a 1700m portage, teams will complete their first stage in the small community of Baysville. After that, teams make their way south on the South Muskoka River navigating around water falls, chutes, swifts and gravel bars. After this seemingly endless paddle that includes many rough wilderness portages and another 1300m portage teams arrive in the town of Bracebridge. From here, team begin their third stage paddling north, upriver and against current on the North Muskoka River. As darkness falls, this punishing stage leads teams through multiple chutes, swift waters, and several more backbreaking portages through the Muskoka wilderness. After arriving in the small hamlet of Port Sydney teams race against an impending fog that frequently settles in during the wee hours of the morning. Returning to Huntsville and the finish line teams will cross Mary Lake and the upper North Muskoka River. In 2013, the fastest team completed this journey in 14 hours and 12 minutes. One third of all teams did not finish. In only its second year, the MRX has drawn a lot of attention from the paddling community internationally and has received several accolades. Registration for 2014 is at 156% compared to 2013 year with 68 teams expecting to hit the water paddling canoes, kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) in three classes; solo, tandem, or relay: There are15 teams from Muskoka/Parry Sound area entered. One great feature to the MRX is the ability for spectators around the world to watch the race in real-time, on-line over the internet. Each team is equipped with a GPS transmitter that registers their location every 5 minutes. Their location is then marked on an on-line map. In this way, spectators can watch the progression of the teams as they make their way around the course. This is a very engaging system that allows anyone, no mater where they are in the world to participate in this event.
