You article “Contours of Caste Advantage” in Sept 25th “Hindu” made me write to you to add additional data to help your thought process. My name CHARU of the first part is Hindu origin and the second part HASAN is Islamic. My father was one Srinivasa Iyengar who was a Gandhian and named his children after his political guru Yakub Hasan the founder of New College in Chennai. There are many north Indians with a name “charuhas” but the hasan a Muslim name preceded by a hindu name Charu is not there as yet. Coming to the point I was born in 1930 and my cohort was chosen from an Iyengar family from Madras city. My father who was freedom fighter entered my name in my school SSLC book as Charuhasan .............caste nil..........Religion Nil. I did my law in the then Bombay state in Karnataka University and 1950 the Indian constitution and warranted caste and religion for decision of forward or scheduled caste and tribe. My results were with held and to get a law degree I had to declare that I was born of Hindu Brahmin parents, but do not profess any caste or religion. The reservation was the only known solution to promote equality which our present media calls inclusive development. The practice of caste separation was there without serious enmity of the mind. The present generation has hidden animosity while preaching equality. We need a little more psychological education towards human equality.
