This man, charles white whittlesey, lead what would be known as the Lost Battalion in the Argonne Forrest of France during WWI. During the battle he and the many hundreds of men he comanded (roughly 550) were beating the Germans back hard, thinking their flanks were covered, and ended up in aa kill box. After 6 days of bloody fighting and no backup, he was able to get what was left of his men out. 197 men were killed and 150 were either taken prisoner or went missing. He was awarded the medal of honir after the battle. After the war he committed suicide because of survivors guilt. Look it, and him, up yall. Its one of the most intense stories of the American campaign during the war. Interesting side note, he was a pallbearer for the unknown soldier along with fell MoH awardee Alvin York.
