This marble group was once the center piece in the main foyer of the Imperial baths of ancient Neopolis, now Naples. In the late 3rd century AD it was removed by loyal pagans who buried it completely to prevent it from being destroyed in the wake of religious riots that engulfed the region...busy zealots with hammers destroyed the artistic heritage of a thousand years in a mere decade or two. Reminds me of what happened in China under Mao and again in Afghanistan more recently....but now there is dynamite. The Chinese have been busily restoring the damage done by the Red Guard and the Big Buddha in Afghanistan is being rebuilt. In the end, civilization and art will always prevail over darkness...
