This may be the single longest article the NYT has ever done on Cannabis. It was written about a recent convention in NYC that I attended that introduced the State of NY to many top names in the Cannabis community and in turn introduced the entrepreneurs to the proposed legal framework in NY. Again, here is a regulatory scheme that simply will not work. They are only allowing 20 retail stores that are directly tied to 5 licensed cultivation facilities. The red tape is massive. Worst of all is that the bill requires all employees to be members of organized labor (unions). This means the costs of building, maintaining and operating either a store or a grow will now be astronomical. (While I am oftentimes a fan of Unions, in this case I am not...it would be a death knell for the industry before it even has te chance to get off the ground) In order for NY to have a shot, there needs to be a far less restrictive ballot initiative that looks much more similar to CO or NV for this to work. This is one issue where the maps you see on MPP or NORML need to provide more information. Just saying a State is a medical State means nothing. They need to let the populous know if the law actually allows patients to have real and safe access to medicine. If they do not, then the law is just a ruse to lull the activists and compassionate care supporters into complacency and that is worse than no law at all. At this point, NY is pretty far from being a green State. Write your elected Congressional leader and let them know that what is currently available is not even close to enough. nytimes/2014/11/02/nyregion/a-competition-to-get-a-medical-marijuana-license-in-new-york.html
