This may not be the most overtly scary thing Ive shared for - TopicsExpress

This may not be the most overtly scary thing Ive shared for Halloween viewing, but it still remains one of the most surprisingly enduring films of the 1970s. What superficially seems like your average TV movie of the week turned out to hit a nerve in North American culture. It did this by exposing its fear of the feminist agenda and showing how desperate the conservative right could be in their attempts to prevent losing their status quo. Upon its original airing it scored major ratings and since then has ingrained itself into the culture to a point where being referred to as a Stepford wife has become an iconic accusation of losing ones self and individuality and becoming nothing more than a compliant, pleasant automaton. Theres something quite profound about the social commentary being made here as evidenced by the fact that the essence of the story is just as relevant today as it was some 40 years ago. That fact alone makes this movie far more unsettling in the long run than most more obviously frightening flicks.
