This may turn out to be a long story but worth the read. When we were at the Ungala Lodge we saw a small herd of old Cape Buffalo Bulls (8 maybe 9) drinking from the river bed below us. Old in the bush means these guys are out of the run and mating is no longer a choice on the menu. Needless to say they can become somewhat grumpy and easily irritated, so we wisely viewed them on the crest of the hill overlooking the almost dry river. The rain will return in just a matter of weeks and the parched earth and rivers will emerge ready to quench the thirst and fill the stomachs of thousands that patiently await the return of spring. Yesterday evening on our 2nd safari of the day, driving along one of the many bumpy dirt roads that crawl throughout Sabi Sands like tentacles of a large squid, we ran smack into a herd of close to 1,000 Cape buffalo. It was an overwhelming sight and almost impossible to comprehend. The buffalo just poured out of the bush blocking our way and surrounded us in just minutes. They were calmly walking around and past our huge Toyota Land Cruiser as if we were not even there. Realizing we were never in any danger, we just sat back and watched this sea of huge black horned buffalo meander across the dry grassy plain toward the lake on the other side of the hills. Our guide was able to slowly pull ahead and the herd just parted until there was enough space to get through. Amazing how everyone knew what to do and did it with such ease. Off we went racing to the large pool of water on the other side of the hill. We got to the top and a good part of this huge herd had already entered the water. Our driver parked us right up to the rivers edge and the fun began for me. These are just a few of the 200 photographs I took.
