This might interest some of the Clemson originals/old timers. This house, in Clemson Heights, was built from wood from the old barracks which were torn down in the late 40s/early 50s, just before Johnstone came into being! All of the wood ( outside, inside, etc) is prime heart pine. Only a few bricks from the barracks were used as they were considered of sub-standard quality, having been made by prisoners when the barracks were constructed way back when. Most of the bricks were from two very old churches being deconstructed over in Greer. It sits on 7 1/2 acres and is the highest private lot in Clemson. There is a great view of the campus ( only seen in winter). The original owner/builder had a swathe of trees cut ( and recut) down behind the house, towards the univ., so that he could, at any time, have a wonderful view of his Dear Old Clemson, from where he had graduated. His name was Bill Scaife. He was a retired Coast Guard Captain and a surveyor. He initially bought 50 acres and surveyed the area and had roads built. He named most of the streets after Indian ( Cherokee) names--Cherokee, Satula, Tamasee, etc. Eventually he sold off all of the lots and kept the highest ( by 10 feet!!) 7.5 acres for himself. Since he and his wife, Bo, felt liberated when they came back to retire here, they named the property Liberty Hill !!
