This might look like a hate confession on first glance, but - TopicsExpress

This might look like a hate confession on first glance, but actually isnt. Working towards the JEE as a general category guy, I always had a negative opinion towards the reservation system in India. It wasnt that I or other people like me would lose their valuable chances of seats because of reservation. I look at it that the board had actually doubled the no. of seats to incorporate the system. I was troubled by the thought that the quality of the IITs would fall down. My negativity multiplied manifold when another guy who had four times my AIR and who had joined the same course in same IIT said to me “You are LUCKY yaar. You got such a nice rank!” . I worked my ass off and I was ‘lucky’ while he got the same thing just because of his birth into some caste. And I’m not talking of an economically backward person here. I have no issues with reserved seats for Physically Challenged people who have shown courage to pursue their dreams and proved that they are very much capable. My realization came after I came here. At first, I avoided those who have come here as what I considered unfair means. After a couple of days, I realized that this system actually made IITs into a proper community with all sorts of people. That’s what society is like. One should know how to deal with people and live together. Being in a place only with people of the same intellect and mentality cannot prepare a person for life. Every kind of person has different talents. People with a lower AIR aren’t bad at studies either. All of us had gone through the hell of ‘coaching’ class and they had ‘cracked’ the JEE too, in their own way! Most of the guys have that carefree and bold attitude that everyone should have in some situations. They know better how to manage people and get their work done. I haven’t come to the IIT just to become an ‘engineer’. There’s much more to the IITs. It’s about the overall personal development. There is something we can learn from anybody. So, it is essential that we get in touch with all sorts of people and the IITs are doing exactly what they are meant to, create an interface. It’s not like I am completely fine with the reservation system yet. There are people who have been living lives of luxury and yet are ‘privileged’ to have seats ‘reserved’ for them. They don’t deserve it, in my view. But, I am not so against the system as I was when I first came here. This place is already changing my views. Wonder what happens in four years!! Loving it!
