This might start some major shit but... hey, its what I feel! Dont ask me why Im bringing this up now, but why has Steve Coleman not been awarded the McArthur fellowship award, to date? This opinion is not in opposition to those artists that have received the award as of late (congratulations and much love to them), its most likely a personal misunderstanding of mine. I thought a genius award of that substantive financial weight, should be granted in proper recognition of factual pioneering and clear actions by a human being whom has worked relentlessly to create a concept, sound and texture that many of us have been influenced by over the years, and who is likely to carry that work forward into the future. Im sure I dont get it as this is not how things really work. I will not limit this question to Steve Coleman’s career, but hes the one artist Ive had the honor (and pain) to work with both as a sideman and a presenter. I still view him as one of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st century. Sure, Mr. Coleman can be a tough character to deal with, but is this what has steered those voting folks to elect someone else in his place year after year? This human being is a modern day master and innovator who should NEVER be overlooked. It’s an embarrassment to our American music culture and heritage...
