This month, a 100 years ago, the Panama Canal opened. This very event surged a whole new market for Snow-Line apples as well as some of the other apple orchards and ranches up here in Oak Glen. The Panama Canal connected the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea and to new markets in New York, England and Europe. Knocking weeks off a long and arduous journey around the tip of South America and our apples wrapped in tissues and placed in our wooden boxes packed in straw or sawdust the apples arrived in great condition for the new markets. We continue doing this until the onset of World War II. Then with the Nazi Blitz over England and the need for war materials the English and European markets went away. After the war Snow-Line started its new market of selling direct to customers here at our Apple Shed. A good example of how “World Events”, good and bad, can effect a small business such as ours. Have a great evening all. Hope to see you soon.
