This month has seen four separate thefts of charity boxes from Nelson business and shop premises. It is believed to be two different offenders but on all occasions the offender has walked into the store and grabbed the charity boxes straight off the counter. Despite staff attempts to prevent this , in one instance a shopkeeper was forced to wrestle one box out of the offenders hand, the thief was determined to steal. It can only be estimated how much cash this involved but we believe that in excess of £200 has been taken. This is not a crime we have seen much of recently but, possibly due to this being Remembrance month, the thief would expect to see a considerably more generous contribution in the charity collections. Today, following some excellent investigative work on cctv by PC 3568 David Richardson, the community beat officer for Southfield and Marsden ward, a 27 year old Nelson man has been arrested, charged with two of these offences and remanded in custody to appear before Burnley magistrates court on Monday the 11th November.
