This morning I am again reminded of how very fortunate I am to have been born in a country that encourages freedom of speech. In Thailand, a person who is perceived to have insulted the king or family of the king, may face years of prison time. All too often the person is convicted. It is also a prison sentence to bring a copy of Anna and the King into Thailand. In Portugal, people are being sentenced to lengthy prison time for ‘insulting the government.’ So, while I thought Western Europe was free from that sort of thing, I was wrong. Not all democracies are equal. Today, 30 young people were arrested for telling Twitter friends where rallies were being staged. My country does have problems, but the basic freedom of being allowed to say what I want is alive and well. I can put up with the petty squabbles in Washington and even criticize the parties. Today, I will again be glad I can speak and write anything I want. I can be wrong, I can be right. I can be an ass but I won’t go to jail for it.
