This morning I am on a NYC bus going to the hospital for my full time job but I am been very confused and sadden from what has happened in the Metro NY area. The protest are great but Economic Sanctions will make a bigger impact. I ask my friends who I exchange gifts with for Christmas, please do not send anything; I will not be doing Christmas gifts this year.This is my way of showing I am tired. Their are good police and bad police, good kids and bad kids. That has always been. I ask you celebrate the holidays by celebrating family, getting back to the true meaning of the holidays and celebrating with food, hugs and love. I have a 28 year old nephew who is studying at Tufts, worked for several political officials running for offices in NYC and is one of the most socially aware and active people I know. But here is the truth, I am worried on a daily basis that I will be receiving a phone call saying he has been killed. Some of you may feel, Oh is she kidding! But he is a tall, 62, dark black male who in this country is an endangered individual. No matter how much education, how much right he is trying to do, and how he was chosen to spend a semester at the University of Hong Kong, his life is less important to this country. I am not and will not address the Ferguson event because things that have come out have made this case not all one sided. But what I will say once and only once, shoot to stop not kill if possible. Most of you are unaware my father was a NYC Police Officer before I was born. In his final interview, the police board actually asked my father was he a drug dealer! My father, like many of us today, was trying to feed his families, keep a roof over our heads and wanted to instill right and wrong with the younger people we are involved with. Please know my friendships and relationships are important to me but doing the right thing is more important. I wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday season.
