This morning I got a new yard bird, this female Purple Finch. So wheres the purple? Being the female, she is one more species that gets gypped in the plumage department. The male is not really purple, but more like crimson. They are closely related to and look a lot like the House Finch, which is much more common.The dark short streaks and the white eyebrow actually make the female relatively easy to distinguish from the female house finch, once youve seen a few. Purple Finches are a northern and high altitude breeder, so this one is just passing through or may stay for part of the winter, depending on food supplies. The first photo was taken with a flash, so less shadow. The second did not use a flash.
