This morning, I had a meeting with members of the media to raise two very important issues in Klang and Selangor:- 1. Open burning on an extensive scale, causing haze on a daily basis leading to critical health and respiratory problems to about 500,000 people in Klang. 2. The Selangor governments refusal to act on an impending water crisis, likely due to the executive being under tremendous siege. Joined by concerned residents on the issue of open burning, it was a wrap up of what we agreed with the Minister, that theyll get an API metre in Bandar Puteri in the next few days, and a period of monitoring to be lengthened after a suggestion by one of the members. A site visit will be scheduled at the end of this month, after API numbers are gathered. Ive informed residents that we need to work together in this matter, and they will try as best to tabulate medical reports on Klangites who have been affected by haze, including either clinic or hospital visits. I will write to the local health department to assist in the data collection as well, and keep the Health Minister in the loop as well. On the issue of water though, things dont look too promising. People have spoken to me saying that they are not getting water in their taps during some hours of the day. This is due to the Selangor government through LUAS, reducing the amount of water being released from dams into treatment plants. The state realises the problem, but may be unwilling to act as the Executive body may be under siege due to the Menteri Besar. He may not want a water rationing, to save whatevers left of his face, but there is clearly a water emergency in front of us. Today, the Sungai Selangor dam is at 32.10%, and due to time being of essence, I mentioned to the media that it would be in the best interest of people in Selangor, for an emergency state assembly session to be called to debate on this water crisis. The Legislature should play its role, now that the Executive is seemingly paralysed. I would extend my suggestions to the state, to implement a complete no-hose policy, including banning all car washing, with due compensation given to car wash operators.
