This morning I stopped at Bialys for bagels. Ahead of me was a young woman in the middle of ordering a bakers dozen. She was clearly anxious to get a move on and I overheard her explain that she was on her way to the airport to return home to Germany to visit her family and wanted to bring them bagels. The kindly clerk lost count of the bagels she ordered and soon there were 14 in two bulging bags. When the young woman went to pay with a credit card, she was told Bialys only takes cash or checks. She very nearly cried. The clerk said, just take them, enjoy the visit home. The woman protested. I told her when someone offers you a kindness, be gracious, take it with thanks and pay it forward. And then I ordered 3 bagels and she gave me 4. I just LOVE Bialys Bagels. Best. Bagels. Anywhere.
