This morning I stopped to get gas at an Arco near my home. A well spoken and well dressed elderly gentleman came up to me with a roll of paper towels and Windex and asked if he could wash my windows. It was exactly the opposite of the presentation I would have expected from someone asking for money at a gas station. I gave him a few buck with no window wash. It started to bug me that a senior citizen had to resort to washing windows at a gas station. I decided to see if I could help him more. Maybe give him a job at my work. I spoke with him and employment would effect his retirement/disability. He said that he just had to do a $300 repair on his car and on his fixed budget that he could not afford to pay some other bills now. He used to drive a taxi for over 30 years and he often gave people change when they came up to him with a squirt bottle and newspaper to wash his taxi window. He thought that perhaps one day he may need to do the same. Now that he just needed to catch up he decided to do it, but with a little more class and dignity. I feel for him and I hope he earned his $300 today.
