This morning, I wake up to disagree with the president & his deputy on the issue of subsidized fertilizer. Last month, during the launch of National soil test result & flagging off fertilizer subsidy worth 7.2B at Egerton University, Farmers all over the country were so happy about the government initiative. Today, the dreams of the over 60% of Kenyans who entirely depend on farming has come true-that they were realy dreaming. First, the procedure for getting the subsidy from NCPB stores can only be managed by an Idler who can spent days moving from MOA offices to Chiefs offices & finally basking the sun outside the spacious NCPB offices for several days as they await the fertilizer which nobody knows the day or hour of its coming-not even the responsible managers. Secondly, farmers in the north rift-the grain basket of Kenya- are being awakened to a shock that accoding to the research, they havent been using the right fertilizer for planting. After some few dons at Egerton carried out tests on 10x10M earth, they now want to install a new manual to experinced farmers who have been doing thousands of acres. NCPB is now forcifully giving farmers NPK 23:23 instead of the DAP 18:46 they paid for in the banks! Third and lastly, the staff at NCPB depots are treating farmers as though they are beggers while in real sence, each of the farmer stuggling around their offices has deposited Kshs 2,000 per each bag they want. My message, to the Jubillee government is to take caution about the fertilizer catels in the country coz theyll do anything to ensure the subsidy is never a success story.
