This morning I want to talk a little about Standing in Line, off - TopicsExpress

This morning I want to talk a little about Standing in Line, off the new record. This is a super simple song (they all are) and the one obligatory rock song on Close to the Sun. I joke, but also its quite true -- I like to have one rockin song on each record because most of my stuff is pretty mellow, but its still fun to rock out sometimes. This one started at Jay Manleys home studio -- we tracked drums, the initial rhythm guitar, and vocals there. I love how Jay records drums; he has them set up in his living room which has a super high ceiling so they sound really big. We finished it at Robs Wizkid Sound, and thats where we brought in the magician David Manpowsky to completely shred on the lead guitar. I basically asked him to make noise on it, and that he did. I had given Rob the Kurt Vile record as a reference point; at times this song reminds me a little of that, all due to Davids playing. Rob added bass and got an amazing tone that fit the song perfectly, and mixed the drums to sound even bigger. Finally, I added an additional harmony vocal which I think makes it a little more poppy, Mike Roman added very tasty, garagy keys, and I played a little tambo and added some handclaps for good measure. I think I remembered everything?!? Check out the result! PS - you can see David shred like this at our show this Friday! It really is fun to watch.
