This morning I woke up at 6, looked at my phone and saw 8. Didnt catch the mistake until I started the van and didnt recognize my normal npr Sunday commute programming. Rather than crawl back in bed and pretend to sleep, I made my way to the swap meet to see and buy what I might not need. The swap meet is such a magically odd cross section of discount America. If the murmurs of the meet are indicative of the pulse of this nation, Obama has run amok and is to blame for everything, from the fact that I couldnt find my keys this morning, to the missing 2nd lp in the Bob Dylan Self Portrait album I wanted to buy for 50c. Probably his fault i woke up so goddamn early. Thanks Obama. Shortly after entering, I had a brief conversation with a seller, he asked my name, I said Alfred, with a handshake. He responded Hitchcock. It took me a minute to realize this was his first name and he didnt have a focused version of Tourettes where he shouted classic directors at people. After this, the 65+ year old Caucasian man said you holdin any Ludacris cds or are all my real life gangstas dead to which I really didnt have an answer. He was trying to push Stones vinyl for $20 so I had to mosey. Found some Bill Cosby records, asked if I could get a rapist discount. No one got it. I found a Donald Byrd record called Ethiopian Knights that Ive been after for 14 years. Dude wanted $3 for it and though its worth $40 I had to get him down to $2. There is no logic there, I turn into a 73 year old Jewish grandmother out there, voice and all. Another dude wanted $2 for a Repo Man laserdisc. Thats where I have to talk my frivolities down, I have no need for a repo man laser disc, but man did I want that shit. Especially when the dude selling it has a tie dyed smurf shirt where the rosy eyed smurf is sitting on top of a mushroom and having a psychedelic experience, I did buy the Old Dirty Bastard Shimmy Shimmy Ya 12. After getting hit on by two grannies, it was time to go. Good times.
