This morning, Joe McDonough spoke to the first year medical - TopicsExpress

This morning, Joe McDonough spoke to the first year medical students at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. This is the fourth year that Joe has been invited to speak to share his unique perspective with the Jefferson Medical College class. He speaks as an advocate, as a parent who lived in the hospital for 167 days straight and as a parent whose child passed away far too young. Speaking as Andrews Dad, Joe shared with the students his thoughts on what every new doctor should know. He reminded them that each patient they interact with is someones son or daughter, someones friend - not just a case study in a textbook. If there is even a 1% chance that the patient will survive, whos to say that patient wont be the 1%? Do not give up on a patient who is trying so hard to live. Take a minute to read what Joe wrote on May 22, 2007 of One Familys Observation of Life in the Hospital > tinyurl/meevzhk. Joe posted it to Andrews CaringBridge during our stay in the hospital. The nurses and doctors caring for Andrew read it and took to heart many of the messages and suggestions he shared. While Andrew was treated at A.I. duPont Hospital for Children| Nemours, physicians at Jefferson were consulted regularly and played a role in Andrews care and comfort. Thank you to Dr. Pohl for, again, extending this invitation. To the first year students - thank you for your interest in this field. Our world needs you. Go make a difference! _______________________________
