This morning, President Obama addressed the nation about Sony - TopicsExpress

This morning, President Obama addressed the nation about Sony pulling The Interview. He echoed the sentiments of many in Hollywood (including yours truly) who have spoken loudly on the issue. Basically, he said that while its awful that Sony and its employees have suffered indignities and the companys taken a financial hit, pulling the film in response to a threat from the poorly-named Guardians of Freedom was an egregious error. Generations of Americans have laid down their lives to protect free speech/expression, including unpopular speech. The lengths we go to ensure ours remains a climate where unpopular ideas are guaranteed the opportunity to be heard is part of what makes America a great nation. While Sony is a private corporation, they exist within this protected climate. And, by very publicly capitulating to terrorists and pulling the film (in conjunction with exhibitors who were leery or refused to show it) Sony has undercut this fundamental American principle. However, theres still time to make this right. Sony could release the film to basic cable or find another way to have it seen. I hope they are aggressively pursuing such options. Well see, in the days ahead, what unfolds.
