This morning, as I sat at in front of my friends car on my way to work, I saw them, school children running home, then I was filled with nostalgia. How I used to love going to school! I’ll tell you something, it was not just for the books but for the socials. Try to remember, there’s no phones then, only plain old playground for fun. Ha! ha! ha! and on those swings, with bruised knees, we earned our respect and forged our bonds. Unless one was tough enough to be in ‘snake house’ I remembered very well, our career days in 1983 , our principal then Mrs. Asinobi would bring pilots, engineers, nurses, doctors, accountants and teachers used to come and tell us about their occupations and their respective relevant subjects. I still remember vividly how I moved from aeronautical engineer to being a geologist, and finally a pilot, all in one career day. Then my class mates Uchenna Osuji chose to be a journalist (and we nicknamed him ‘DELE GIWA’) Moore Douglas chose to be a Nuclear Physicist , Chibuke Nlewedim said he would be an Oceanographer, a lot of us then. We were all choosing from one big name to the other, just like that, but the good thing was that at least we wanted to be something. Those professionals came, not in flashy cars totting big gadgets, all they came with was their hearts and their passions for their jobs, and that was what bought us over and not the money they had. With these memories in my mind, I turned to a senior colleague who was sitting next to me and said, I hope you are raising your kids to be contented with what they have? He said yes. I then reminded him of our career days and asked him what he thought would happen if we went for a career day in one of these schools of today, and lets say a Tompolo, Shekaru, , an Asari Dokubo or Henry Okah also walked into the same career day and we both had a good laugh on the thought. These people brought merit down on its knees we know that. If we talk until our spits run dry and Asari walks in and distributes free iPods………. which career would they choose? Will they choose... Money over honesty? Long leg over merit? Treachery over loyalty? Short cuts over hard work? What exactly will they choose? Our country is in trouble ...Im just thinking.
