This morning as I was driving my son to school (about 4 hours after I posted my essay and went to bed), I was thinking about what it was like just prior to the priesthood being extended to ALL worthy males. It struck me, that in the history of the Church or even the US, I have not once heard of or read of any of the black members of the LDS Church publicly campaigning for the priesthood. And it affected the women as well as the men. If the black men could not hold the priesthood, then the black women could not receive their temple covenants. And yet.... not a single story exists that tells of a protest made by the black members of the LDS Church pre-1978 at Church Headquarters requesting the priesthood. As I thought this, I recognized just how humble and meek the black members of the Church were. They were faithfully and patiently waiting upon the Lord (serving him however they could) for the priesthood to be extended to them. Truly, there has never been a more humble people. This thought reconfirmed to me that the black members of the Church have ALWAYS been worthy and ready for the priesthood. The ban really was (in my opinion) because the white members were not ready for the blacks to have the priesthood. For anyone who seeks to bring about change within the LDS Church, it would be wise to follow the example of our black brethren and sisters. ldsgenesisgroup.org/ (and read the poem "Our Experience" at the bottom of the page - it gave me chills when I read it!)
