This morning at 10:30 am, the House Education Committee will consider legislation (House Bill 5669) to add non-public schools to the list of authorized providers of professional development. HB 5669 is important because it will allow non-public school teachers to count the professional development hours they attend at their school towards the requirements for recertification, as public school teachers do. Currently, non-public school teachers can count college credits or continuing education units towards recertification, but they cannot count professional development hours, even if it is the same content as those hours counted by their public school counterparts.
