This morning, at a local home in Uglich, Russia, I sampled traditional pickles, bread, cheese, & cake. It took the family 14 years to build their modest home and just the cost of heating it in the winter takes 1/3 of the husbands monthly salary. The Russian people are wonderfully friendly and, quite to my surprise, dont hesitate to criticize their own government if they feel like it. Two days ago in Moscow, around 30,000 anti-Putin people marched in a peace demonstration to make their opposition to the war in Ukraine known. There is no overt oppression in Russia these days; the KGB no longer exists, and Russians are free to travel wherever they wish. I have been really surprised by how cosmopolitan Moscow is, and feel totally silly for expecting a dark and dismal society. At noon, our @Viking_Cruises was underway again, steadily making our way to St. Petersburg. At the moment we are on the Volga River in remote, rural Russia (see the photo of the bridge over the Volga River, taken from the ships Panorama Bar). More whenever I have a decent Internet connection.
