This morning at approximately 9:30 am a student discharged a pocket-sized pepper spray in a classroom at the Carteret Middle School. Initial reports are that there were 13 students present in the class room at the time of the incident and that 3 students and 1 teacher were immediately treated by Carteret and Port Reading First Aid, with some being transported to area hospitals. Carteret emergency personnel were on the scene within several minutes and two students involved are being questioned. This is not the result of any type of altercation, and an investigation is being conducted to determine if this was an accident or the result of a classroom stunt. Upon conclusion of the investigation the Board of Education administration and police department need to take action to ensure that, if this was a prank, the individuals involved are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and, if it was an accidental discharge, students and staff are educated as to the dangers of bringing any unauthorized substance into a closed environment such as a school.
