This morning at breakfast, grandson Sam said, in passing, that he might go to grad school in California, where he wasnt likely to get shot at. I was stunned for a second; I am one of those grandmas who never imagined that I should be teaching him the rules of race in America. But I should have. Hes had a couple encounters, which he makes light of -- odd stops by police patrols, odd questionings (I remember at least one about what exotic race he belonged to). But now hes old enough to be reading about Ferguson and New York City and Chicago and Arizona, and to be picking the state (_The State!_) where hes likely to be more safe. Even Oregon, if one goes south or east, could be dangerous. What have we come to in the United States of America? I was living in a bubble of white privilege. He is outside that bubble.
