This morning brought a glimmer of hope to the ongoing saga of public education defilement. The long awaited word was finally been uttered... DEAL. But the journey to that word has been a painful one, and teachers have taken the brunt of the pain and abuse. Yes students and parents have been impacted, but it is teachers who have been dragged through the mud in spectacular fashion as they fought, not to just maintain status quo public education, but to strengthen it. But what most of BC will not see, ponder, or consider, as teachers and students resume their educational journey together, is how teachers will recover from this thorough public flogging. I dont know too many professions that have endured such venomous criticisms in such a public forum.Teachers have been called greedy, lazy, unworthy of fair pay, unworthy of legal rights, unworthy of public money, and unworthy of public respect. As a teacher deemed unworthy of respect from your society and your government, how do you as a teaching professional come to terms with that as you enter the classroom on Monday with a room full of children staring at you waiting expectantly for a good quality education? Next week (fingers crossed) well send teachers our most precious and loved entities for an education. Teachers will be there ready to meet that challenge head on, working hard to meet our childrens needs as they always have. But this time its with an acute raw perspective of how teachers are valued by the society they serve. Its a mixed bag of emotions on that front that may take some time to come to terms with. Cue the school bell... Thankyou Meghan Wise, I couldnt have expressed it better myself.
