This morning, during our visit from Janet Gorrell of the Humane - TopicsExpress

This morning, during our visit from Janet Gorrell of the Humane Society of Johnson County, I shared about my Winnie. She had been someones Christmas puppy with a VERY unhappy ending. She wasnt even three months old when she became Daddys Beagle Baby in early 2004. Because of our similar start in life, we always had a kindred connection. We bonded instantly and intrinsically. With patience and perseverance -- and more love than either of us ever thought we deserved -- we managed to make a life together. We were each still broken but better each day. Nothing could darn my frayed and tattered tether to sanity quite like the innocence in those big brown eyes [behind such cartoonishly long lashes]. I always knew that she always knew. We were always safe when we were together. Yesterday, after 11 years and a long battle with Cushings disease, it was time to say the last and worst goodbye to one another. Winnie let me know that she was ready and we got to spend one last afternoon together. I will always love her dearly and deeply and, while it is excruciating to let her go, I know my life is better for having had her in it. I also know that I will one day love again. As I tell you all this, I want to remind you that Winnie was a shelter dog. There are so many like her -- so many capable of such unconditional love -- that need the same chance, that need a forever friend. There are so many ways to make that happen -- as an adopter, a volunteer, a contributor, a corporate sponsor -- through HSJC.org. To borrow from a song written by Brett James and Bill Luther, recorded by Kenny Chesney and others: I loved loving her and she loved loving me. [Thanks to Amy for that reference.] Thats a feeling everyone should get to have. -Robb
