This morning the AUA Americas (which was represented by Mr. Matthew Thomas) participated in the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) at the United Nations, a high plenary meeting of the General Assembly taking place over the next two days September 22-23. The WCIP marks the commencement of this week’s UN General Assembly and is attended by thousands of indigenous and non-indigenous people including Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, President of the General Assembly Sam Kutesa, and UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein. In addition to addressing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), which was a focal point of the 13th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues that the AUA Americas attended this past May, the WCIP is expected to result in an action oriented outcome document that seeks to provide practical steps in fulfilling the commitments of member states in implementing the UNDRIP.
