This morning the final hurricane flight for Hurricane Julio left - TopicsExpress

This morning the final hurricane flight for Hurricane Julio left to conduct the final weather collection mission for the storm. While performing their mission, a sailboat was in distress and a mayday call was sent out to the U.S. Coast Guard. The crew of this 53rd WRS WC-130J had just started on their return to Hickam Air Force Base and were contacted to assist in the search and rescue mission. With no hesitation, the crew changed direction and headed back to the northeast side of the storm to assist. Within an hour the Hurricane Hunters were in the last known location area of the sailboat and were now `hunting` a distressed sailboat. After dropping to a lower altitude, the mayday call was heard. Keeping radio contact with the survivors onboard the sailboat, the Hurricane Hunters notified the U.S. Coast Guard of their location and guided them to the scene. After turning over the rescue mission to a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft, the Hurricane Hunters returned to Hickam AFB.
