This morning was a wonderful morning. CAAM’s board meeting, that - TopicsExpress

This morning was a wonderful morning. CAAM’s board meeting, that so many of us attended, left me feeling both hopeful and energized about the possibilities that lie ahead. BAILA members were eloquent, passionate, and constructive in their public comments. Among others, Vincent Johnson could not have been more explosive, nor Lili Bernard more righteously indignant. And it was reassuring to see how welcoming Board President Todd Hawkins and how warm Rev. Cecil Murray were in their remarks and responses. I would like to propose that BAILA offer a little twist on the concept Todd Hawkins offered, of a community roundtable: I would propose that BAILA meet with curator Mar Hollingsworth, Vida Brown, Woody Schofield, and interested board members, to discuss in a less formalized give-and-take, some exhibition and community participation possibilities, with our new understanding of funding and scheduling priorities and restrictions. On a related note, Todd and Woody mentioned that, because of encumbrances on museum funds, there are “Holes to fill” in CAAM’s exhibition schedule. I discussed with a few BAILA members, at meeting’s end, the idea of some of our artists selecting one work apiece from the permanent collection that particularly speaks to them, marrying it with a piece of their own, and explaining in a text panel the significance of the artwork/artist and her/his/its relationship to their own work. This seems to be a relatively simple, inexpensive, yet edifying exhibition possibility. Thoughts?
