This morning was relatively quiet with only 233 traffic movements. But the 3pm sample was busy. 334 Vehicular movements in 30 minutes. 37 pedestrians, including 5 bikes, 1 pram, 1 walker assist and a pedestrian on crutches. I think this weeks five day sample of traffic shows beyond any doubt that we need those zebra stripes put back in a hurry. It would appear however that the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will not permit the lines to be replaced until the lighting is finished as it would be against regulations to have a crossing without lighting. Even though it hardly gets used when dark. Now Im not sure what they mean by Lighting I am aware that the council has now forwarded the RTS a full lighting plan but it is up to the RTS to approve it. God knows how long that will take. Once its approved the lights have to be put in. Now I am imagining a lovely pair of Victorian decorative and functional road lamps on either side of the crossing, but in the back of my mind I can envisage yet another set of spindly wooden poles and more dangling wires festooning the already tangled street scape. I will phone the RMS and speak to Ian HARMON on Monday and see if they have any idea of just how long it may be before we see the lines back on the road surface. In the meantime I will go and see our local Police and see if they can come and do 15 minutes of traffic control in the mornings and afternoon as part of their Community Policing Incentive. Councillor Paul Cockram has been a big help in getting the survey done and I will present the final vehicle report and recommendations to him soon. He can then at least give it to council for their information and any relevant action they feel necessary.
