This morning was the big meeting at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation - TopicsExpress

This morning was the big meeting at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute to let us new care providers Debra Goodrich, Myresa Johnston, Rosalie Grow and myself) know what we are in store for when Vin comes home on the 31st. It will be 24/7 for a while, but at the rate she is recovering, we have high hopes for a (somewhat) self-sufficient life for her in the long run. The aphasia aspect of her retraining/therapy will be the difficult part for her. I think that Debbie will be wonderful in helping her out with remembering words, reading/ writing, that sort of thing. Another difficult area will be focus. I can picture her starting a fried egg sandwich or something, becoming sidetracked, then not remembering the sandwich until the kitchen bursts into flames. Well just keep an eye on things and all will be fine. I know many of you are anxious to talk with her. She wants to talk with you all as well, but she is very self-conscious about her aphasia. She hears herself not making sense and gets frustrated when the words she is searching for are either nonsensically replaced with random words or are gone altogether lost in the fog somewhere. Its a slow process to relearn all of that and we are trying to teach her work arounds to prevent conversations from screeching to a complete halt. If she could describe the missing word somehow it would be easier, but on the phone, its impossible to use hand gestures. For instance she could want to say hammer, but banana comes out instead. With a quick hammering hand gesture, you know she means hammer. Just give her some time to get her phone skills worked on, and she will be happy to chat with everyone. I just have a couple of more preparations to make to get ready for her release on the 31st. We cant wait to get her home again!!!
