This morning, we found ourselves at the gates outside of the UN - TopicsExpress

This morning, we found ourselves at the gates outside of the UN building. With a small group of DC activists, we held our position near the Nigerian Embassy... Well, on their steps actually. Their security came out and angrily yelled at us to leave. Instead, Jason McGaughey ordered breakfast for our little rabble crew. A few minutes later, a police officer acting as a liaison to whoever he answers to demanded us to leave again. Then I had a moment... I found my voice. Look, we can stand here and have a shouting contest and see who wins (and I think you know who will be louder)... But know this- We are not moving for you or anyone else. He put his hands up and said Hey, look, I dont want to fight with you on this- I am against fracking too! Mimicking his hands up gesture, I said We are not here to fight with you either, and since we share this view on fracking, let us be YOUR voice. him-But you are not allowed to be here! me-As a citizen of the United States- I give myself permission to be here. His face calmed and we saw each other as human beings. Fine, I am going to pretend I did not see you but if another department comes, they might not be willing to negotiate the way I am. I laughed and said We will cross that bridge when the time comes, in the meantime, we are going to enjoy our breakfast. We shook hands and he went off into the crowd. Truth to Power.
