This mornings Lenten devotional reading ROCKED!!! Often, when we hear Render to Caesar what is Caesars, we focus on possible distinctions between the spiritual and the secular. But Jesus isnt expounding on church-state relations; hes walking his path to the cross. The specifics of the religious leaders questions abbot paying taxes point to their repeated desire to trap Jesus by what he said, so as to hand him over to... the governor. If Jesus has set his face toward Jerusalem, the authorities are just as determined to help him get there. Their intent is quite different: Jesus moves toward Calvary in an act of self-sacrifice, while the authorities want to kill him as an act of self-protection. The irony is that they believe they are undermining him by sending him to the cross, when that has been his mission all along.
