This mornings sounding shows a moist, unstable environment in place over Middle Tennessee, the best sounding weve seen in a while. Our precipitable water is 1.66 inches, with a K-index of 34. The lifted index is -4.6, and the convective available potential energy (CAPE) is 3,255 J/kg. Take the square root of the CAPE and you get a maximum theoretical updraft speed of 57.1 meters per second. Given that we have a cold front just to our north, with a pre-frontal trough coming through this afternoon, the environment is ripe for thunderstorm development. We are on target with the slight risk today and tonight, and some localized flooding is not out of the question, especially over eastern Middle Tennessee where we are expecting a bit more rainfall the next 24 hours.
